Alumni to Speak on Quantum Computer (Posted February 5, 2004)
Dr. Rudy Krutar (CS 1966 and 1976) will be speaking on "The Rabi Quantum Computer, a Venture in Philosophy" on Friday, February 6, 2004 at 8:15 p.m. at Philosophical Society of Washington meeting. The presentation will be taking place in the John Wesley Powell auditorium adjoining the Cosmos Club on Massachusetts & Florida Avenues in NW Washington DC.

Megan Hammond Update (Posted August 2003)
We are happy to report that the needs of Megan Hammond, the Carnegie Mellon architecture student who is hearing impaired and was recently featured in The Washington Post, are being met with assistance from the University's Office of Equal Opportunity Services and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.

While it is nice to know Megan’s needs are being met, we are pleased to know a number of our local alumni were moved by her story and willing to help. Let’s turn that willingness into a commitment and show our support of Dean Michael Murphy (HEINZ 1986) and his efforts to come to the aid of students like Megan. With our support of funds managed directly by the dean, he can assist even more students with a wide array of needs. The more funding available to him, the more Dean Murphy can reach out to students in need.

We know that Dean Murphy would welcome contributions to the Friendship Fund, originally established by alumna Niloo Sobhani (S 1993), to assist students like Megan. If you would like to personally help, please send your contribution to:

Multimedia Network
Art Donner (Heinz/SUPA 1973) is managing a federal multimedia network known as the BOPSAT. This network is open to federal employees who are interested in multimedia topics and who want to network. Periodically, meetings are held in the Washington DC area or via the Internet. The BOPSAT (Bunch of People Sitting Around and Talking) was created by the Social Security Administration and is now hosted by the U.S. EPA. A BOPSAT Listserv was created and 150 federal employees from various non-military and military agencies are subscribed. Meeting announcements and topics of interest are distributed via the Listserv.

Washington Wizards Tickets Raffle
The raffle winners of tickets to the Washington Wizards game on April 14 against the New York Knicks were John Breslin (H&SS 1998) and Ryan Parzick (CIT 2000). A total of 25 alumni participated in the raffle for the game against the New York Knicks which is Michael Jordan's last regular season home game. A total of $250 was raised for the local alumni chapter.

Shaping 21st Century Public Information Policy
The Heinz School's Institute for the Study of Information Technology & Society ("InSITeS") is a sponsor of an upcoming conference on public information policy with some impressive speakers lined up. The conference will be held April 24- 25, 2003 at the Georgetown University Law Center. Click here for more information or to register for this conference.

Book Signing -- Dr. Sharon T. Freeman
On Monday, March 24, the Library of Congress hosted a talk and book signing by fellow alum Dr. Sharon T. Freeman (H&SS 1974, HEINZ 1977) who is the author and publisher of "Conversations With Powerful African Women Leaders: Inspiration, Motivation, and Strategy."

Donald W. Fitzpatrick (CIT1967)
On Saturday, March 1 during a dense fog, a small plane crashed in Leesburg, Virginia, killing three people including Donald W. Fitzpatrick, 58, of Reston, Virginia and a 1967 graduate of Carnegie Mellon. Donald, an Electrical & Computer Engineering graduate, was the founder, CEO, and President of High Performance Technologies based in Arlington, Virginia.

The viewing was held on Thursday, March 6, 2003 at the Money and King Vienna Funeral Home in Vienna, VA and the funeral service was held Friday, March 7, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Bible Church in Springfield, VA. Donald was intern in Fairfax Memorial Park in Fairfax, VA.

The Beams are Creaking
Lisa Hawkins (CFA1996) directed "The Beams are Creaking" which was the first production of the newly formed Shadows of Light Productions. The play was about German Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer's struggle to live for Christ in Nazi Germany and is written by Douglas Anderson. Show dates were in early November 2002 and held at the Black Box Theatre in the First Baptist Church located in Arlington, Va.
