Planning Meeting 
November 26, 2002 -- A half dozen alumni planned exciting events for 2003 ranging from seminars and happy hours to hockey and baseball games. Thanks to Ira Kuhn (GSIA 1961) for hosting the meeting at his offices in Arlington, Va. In attendance were Teresa Allison (HEINZ 1999), Dave Calvo (CIT 1995), Tim Liu (H&SS 1985), Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997), and Bill Scholtz (CIT 1962).

Happy Hour at eCiti Cafe & Bar 
November 20, 2002 -- Alumni gathered for the last happy hour of 2002 at the hip and trendy eCiti Cafe & Bar in Tysons Corner, Va. Thanks to Jessica Strelitz (H&SS 1998) and Amy Lanks (IM 1997) for organizing the event. Stay tuned for the list of hip happy hour locations scheduled for 2003.

Book Forum on "History of Federal Reserve" by Prof. Allan Meltzer 
November 18, 2002 -- More than 100 people, including 50 alumni, attended a book forum on Professor Allan Meltzer's book, "A History of the Federal Reserve, Vol. I, 1913-1951". Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, introduced Prof. Meltzer at the event, which was sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute.

Professional Networking Seminar
November 7, 2002 -- Nearly 50 alumni and guests participated in an interactive seminar on professional networking and how to make your contacts count. The seminar was taught by Lynne Waymon, author and frequent speaker on networking and career development. Happy Hour with the Sharks in Bethesda, MD
October 23 , 2002 -- More than 20 alumni attended a happy hour at the Shark Club which has real sharks swimming in large water tanks and pool tables. Thanks to Teresa Allison (HEINZ 1999) for organizing the event.

 

Faculty Seminar and Reception with Dr. Allan Meltzer 
October 21 , 2002 -- Nearly 40 alumni attended a seminar and reception with Dr. Allan Meltzer. Thanks to Jack Dawson (GSIA 1999) and GSIA Washington Area alumni chapter president Lois Findlay (GSIA 1991) for organizing the event. The reception was sponsored by GSIA Alumni Relations Director John Sengenberger who was visiting from Pittsburgh.

Solar Decathlon on the National Mall
September 28 , 2002 -- More than a dozen alumni visited the Carnegie Mellon entry in the Solar Decathlon event on the National Mall which showcased innovative building and energy design concepts. Happy Hour at Fado Irish Pub
September 28 , 2002 -- After the Solar Decathlon event, more than a dozen alumni and another ten current students converged on Fado Irish Pub in downtown D.C. Seminar on the Crime in America
September 26 , 2002 -- Twenty three alumni and five guests enjoyed a
riveting seminar on the rise and fall of the crime rate in America during the past two decades. Heinz Professor Alfred Blumstein shared a wealth of data and stories on the impact of incarceration laws, the drug market, handguns, and law enforcement. Heinz Welcome Happy Hour for Recent Graduates
September 13, 2002 -- A happy hour for recent graduates from the Heinz school was held at La Vie De France. Nearly 30 alumni attended this event organized by the DC Heinz alumni committee.

Boston Pops at Wolf Trap
August 21, 2002 -- Twenty alumni and friends
enjoyed a spectacular live outdoor performance by the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, conducted by fellow alum Keith Lockhart (CFA 1983) at Wolf Trap's Filene Center in Vienna, Va. The Boston Pops are on a tour paying tribute to Richard Rodgers, the legendary composer of The King and I, The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Oklahoma!, and Carousel. Thanks to Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997) for organizing the event.

Faculty Seminar -- Corporate Scandals
August 14, 2002 -- The recent corporate scandals involving Arthur Andersen, Enron, and Worldcom as well as the role of the accountants, Congress, investors, and the financial community were debated during the seminar "Anatomy of an Accounting Meltdown." The highly interactive session was facilitated by University of Maryland Professor James Peters (formerly from the Heinz school) and was attended by 24 alumni plus a few other guests in Arlington, Va. Thanks to Teresa Allison (HEINZ 1999) for organizing the event.

Bowie Baysox Minor League Baseball Game
August 4, 2002 --
Nearly 20 alumni and friends saw the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Oriole's Class AA affiliate) beat the Altoona Curve (Class AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates) 9 to 4 on a sunny Sunday. 

Scottish Festival
July 28, 2002 --
Nearly a dozen alumni and friends enjoyed the festivities of the annual Virginia Scottish Games and Gathering of the Clans held on the beautiful 130-acre campus of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. Attendees enjoyed watching bag-piping, Highland dancing, fiddling and harping, the famous caber toss, and a British car show as well as visiting the Scottish pub tent and Clan tents. Thanks to David Calvo (CIT 1995) and Lois Findlay (GSIA 1991) for organizing the event.

Freshmen On the Road
July 21, 2002 --
More than 25 incoming freshmen and their families from the D.C. metropolitan area attended the Freshmen on the Road event at alumni Mike Oldak's (CIT 1969) house in Bethesda, Md. More than 60 people attended the picnic and heard from Anne Wichner from Student Affairs plus several current students who are in the D.C. area for the summer. Thanks to Peter Rapp (CIT 1973, CIT 1976, GSIA 1976) for organizing the event, Mike Oldak for hosting the event, plus volunteers Lori Weiss (CIT 1995), Scott Davis (HEINZ 1997), and Tim Liu (H&SS 1985).

Happy Hour at Clarendon Ballroom
July 17, 2002 --
On the rooftop deck of the Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington, Va., more than 50 alumni gathered for happy hour. Thanks to Peter Yeung (IM 2000, MISM 2001) for organizing the event.

GSIA Alumni Summer Picnic
July 13, 2002 --
Nearly 50 Carnegie Mellon MBAs, family, and friends enjoyed a great cookout, superb weather, and a spirited round of volleyball at the first annual GSIA Alumni Summer Picnic. The event was held at Nottoway Park in Vienna, Va. Thanks to organizers Namita Amin (GSIA 2000) and Jill Wright (GSIA 1988), and the other planning committee members who helped make the first GSIA Washington Area Alumni Chapter major event a success!

Summer Planning Meeting

Heinz Summer Intern Happy Hour
July 9, 2002 -- More than twenty Heinz alumni and current student interns in D.C. enjoyed a terrific happy hour at Cafe Asia in Arlington, Va. Thanks to Heng Meas (HEINZ 1999) for organizing the event.

Seminar with Rebecca Lankey from the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy
June 27, 2002 --
Dr. Rebecca Lankey (CIT 1998), American Society of Mechanical Engineers Fellow in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, gave a talk on environmental policy. A dozen alumni and current students who are in DC for the summer attended the seminar organized by Alex Carr (CIT 1981).

Summer Interns attend Communications Seminar
June 12, 2002 -- Ten current Carnegie Mellon students, who are in D.C. for their summer internship,  attended a seminar given by Professor Bev Sauer on communicating risks.  She focused on the communication challenges in dealing with the limitations of written documentation, cross-culture issues, and hand gestures. The seminar was organized by Alexandra Carr (CIT 1981) who is coordinating activities for the dozen summer interns. She is also the Director of the Washington Office of Carnegie Mellon's Department of Engineering and Public Policy. Also in attendance were David Calvo (CIT 1995) and Tim Liu (H&SS 1985) to greet the summer interns.

Summer Planning
June 11, 2002 -- A dozen committed alumni met in Arlington, Va. to plan several upcoming summer events ranging from speakers, sports events, networking events, and happy hours. During the meeting, we went over the results of the recent alumni survey. Thanks to the 195 people who responded!

May 29, 2002 -- Our new happy hour committee found a great new location for mixing and mingling. More than 30 alumni gathered at Champps Americana located in Pentagon Row in the Pentagon City area of Arlington, Va. Thanks to Peter Yeung (IM2000, MISM2001), Alex Armstrong (IM1997), and Don Scaltrito (MCS 1997) for organizing their first alumni event.

Local Alumni Team Huddles and Makes Plans for the Year
May 9, 2002 -- A great dinner meeting was held at Gordon Biersch in downtown D.C. the day after a terrific evening reception with Carnegie Mellon President Dr. Jared Cohon and Heinz Dean Jeffrey Hunker. More than 25 people attended the planning dinner which was sponsored by the Alumni Office. Local chapter President Lori Weiss (CIT 1995) led the meeting which sought input from alumni. The group then divided into two breakout discussions on events, led by Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997) and communications, led by Tim Liu (H&SS 1985).

Reception with President Dr. Jared Cohon and Heinz Dean Jeffrey Hunker
May 8, 2002 -- Carnegie Mellon alumni mixed and mingled at the Cosmos Club, home of a private social club, where the intellectual elite of Washington, D.C. debate the arts, economics, international affairs, politics, and science. Nearly 200 alumni and guests attended the reception and then listened to Carnegie Mellon President Dr. Jared Cohon and Heinz Dean Dr. Jeffrey Hunker. Dr. Cohon gave an update on Carnegie Mellon's rise in stature and the importance of Washington, D.C. in terms of reaching out to alumni as well as working with policy makers. Dr. Jeffrey Hunker spoke about Carnegie Mellon's efforts and contributions to national and international security.

The local alumni chapter presented Dr. Cohon and Dr. Hunker with certificates of appreciation for their leadership. A donation was made to the Arlington County Commemorative Tree Program for a tree to be planted in the Fall of 2002 near the Pentagon in memory of the Carnegie Mellon alumni and all those who died on September 11, 2001.

GSIA Happy Hour at The Brickskeller
May 8, 2002 -  A dozen GSIA'ers joined Alumni Relations Director John Sengenberger at The Brickskeller after the Cohon/Hunker Reception. Thanks to Jean-Luc Park (SCS 1994, GSIA 1998) for coordinated this outing.

 

Happy Hour at Whitlow's on Wilson
March 28, 2002 -- WOW! More than 30 Carnegie Mellon alumni gathered at  Whitlow's on Wilson in Arlington, Va.. The place was hopping with new faces among the regulars. Hexagon: Politics and Confucius
March 14, 2002 -- Nearly 30 Carnegie Mellon alumni, family, and friends attended "It's a Grand Old Gag", the theme of the 47th annual Hexagon show--Washington's only original, political, satirical, musical comedy revue. Just before the show at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, most attended dinner at Confucius Cafe in Georgetown. Thanks to Lois Findlay (GSIA 1991) for organizing this event.

February 28, 2002 -- Dozens of Carnegie Mellon alumni converged on downtown D.C. for a happy hour at the Sign of the Whale. 

 

Emeritus Professor Ted Fenton on History of Carnegie Mellon
February 7, 2002 -- Nearly 60 Carnegie Mellon alumni attended a reception and discussion with Ted Fenton, Emeritus Professor of History, to hear his interesting perspectives on the history of Carnegie Mellon. Thanks to Lori Weiss (CIT 1995) and Terry Rosenberger from Alumni Relations for organizing the event at the conference center in the Software Engineering Institute office in Arlington, Va.

GSIA Rocks Rock Bottom Brewery
February 7, 2002 -- More than 30 alumni from Carnegie Mellon's business program gathered at Rock Bottom Brewery in Arlington, Va. after the Ted Fenton reception to catch up, socialize and discuss ideas for a GSIA Washington Area Alumni Chapter. Thanks to Lois Findlay (GSIA 1991), Jean-Luc Park (SCS 1994, GSIA 1998), and John Sengenberger, GSIA's Director of Alumni Relations, for organizing this informal get together.
