Financial Planning Seminar in Arlington, Va.

Faculty Reception and Seminar with Professor Lester Lave
Thursday, November 6, 2003 -- More than 50 alumni attended a reception and seminar with GSIA professor Lester Lave. He spoke on the regulatory policy implications of the Northeast Blackout of 2003.

Homecoming in Pittsburgh, Va.
Friday, October 24, 2003 -- A small group drove back to Pittsburgh for Homecoming weekend. We will gauge interest for next year's homecoming.

Happy Hour at CarPool in Arlington, Va.
Wednesday, October 22, 2003 -- A crowd of 30 alumni attended a happy hour at CarPool for a billiards tournament, darts, and conversation. Fifteen people competed for a cash drawing with half of the contributions going to the alumni group and the other half going to a lucky winner. Congratulations to the winner, Raj Verma. Reception with Provost Dr. Mark Kamlet in Washington, D.C.
Saturday, October 18, 2003 -- Nearly 50 alumni and friends enjoyed a reception at McCormick & Schmick's in downtown Washington, D.C. Dr. Mark Kamlet, Provost of Carnegie Mellon and responsible for overseeing all academic and research initiatives spoke about a variety of exciting developments. Astrid Rapp, current chapter president, presented Lori Weiss, past chapter president, with a gift to thank her for leading the chapter. Thanks to the University's Alumni Office for sponsoring this event and to Terry Rosenberger from the alumni office for organizing the event.

Linda Babcock Seminar on Negotiations in Washington, D.C.
Thursday, October 16, 2003 -- About a dozen alumni attended a seminar organized by the Women's Business Center that featured Heinz professor Linda Babcock. She spoke about her research recently published in her book, titled "Women Don't Ask" that advises women on how to negotiate.

Tour of Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
Thursday, October 9, 2003 -- Twelve alumni and friends visited the Phillips Collection in tour the
Surrealism and Modernism exhibit from the Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Thanks to Amy Lanks (IM 1997) for organizing a terrific event.

Sunday, September 28, 2003 -- About a dozen alumni, family, and friends gathered in Rock Creek Park in the middle of Washington, D.C. to enjoy a beautiful day for a picnic.

Lecture and Tour of Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Thursday, September 25, 2003 -- More than 20 alumni, family, and friends enjoyed a wonderful evening of art culture at The Corcoran Gallery of Art. The evening began with a lecture by Christina DePaul (CFA 1981), Dean of the Corcoran College of Art. She shared about career path since graduating from Carnegie Mellon. Afterwards, a curator lead the group on a private tour of Beyond the Frame: Impressionism Revisited - The Sculptures of J. Seward Johnson, Jr. The evening closed with a wine and cheese reception. Thanks to Monica Robles (GSIA 2000) for organizing an enjoyable and educational event.

Happy Hour in Baltimore, Md.
Tuesday, August 26, 2003 -- Five alumni and a guest made it to a happy hour at Mondo's at Power Plant Live! despite the rain and the closed kitchen at McFadden's. Thanks to Melissa Myers (IM 1997) and Courtney Spent (IM 1997) for organizing the event. Stay tuned for future events in Baltimore.

Boston Pops and Keith Lockhart at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va.
Wednesday, August 20, 2003 -- About 20 alumni and guests enjoyed the music of the Boston Pops at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va. After the wonderful performance, the group had a chance to meet conductor Keith Lockhart (CFA 1987). Thanks to Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997) for organizing the event and Nancy Jackson (CFA 1946) for arranging the meeting with Keith Lockhart.

Networking Lunch for Non-Profits and Associations
Friday, August 15, 2003 -- Eight alumni who work with non-profits and associations gathered together for lunch at Stack's Deli in downtown D.C. The group plans to get together in the future for lunch again. Thanks to Teresa Allison (Heinz 1999) for organizing this lunch.

Happy Hour at Rock Bottom Brewery in Arlington, Va.
Wednesday, August 6, 2003 -- The Rock Bottom Brewery is the place to be in D.C. with its $1 beers on Wednesday night. Nearly 30 alumni hung out together in a crowded bar area. Recent graduates mingled with graduates from as far back as the 1960's. Graduates from CIT, H&SS, Heinz, GSIA, and MCS were out in full force. Bowie Baysox Minor League Baseball in Maryland
Sunday, July 27, 2003 -- A dozen alumni and guests watched the Bowie Baysox (Pittsburgh Pirates AA-affiliate) defeat the Altoona Curve 2-0. Michael Swann, the 5-year old son of Thomas Swann (GSIA 1994), got to run around the bases in the middle of the 6th inning. Thanks to Dave Calvo (CIT 1995) for organizing this fun afternoon event.

DC United and Washington Freedom Soccer at RFK Stadium
Saturday, July 19, 2003 -- Twenty alumni and guests watched a doubleheader soccer game at RFK stadium. The DC United men's team lost to the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 and the Washington Freedom women's team defeated the NY Powers 2-0. Thanks to Teresa Allison (Heinz 1999) for arranging the event.

Freshman on the Road in Bethesda, Md.
Saturday, July 13, 2003 -- Students starting at Carnegie Mellon in the Fall, their parents, and alumni gathered together at the annual Freshman on the Road event held at Mike Oldak's (CIT 1969) house in Bethesda, Md. The event was co-hosted by Peter Rapp (CIT 1973, CIT 1976, GSIA 1976) and other alumni volunteers included Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997) and Scott Davis (Heinz 1997).

Summer Intern Seminar Event in Downtown D.C.
Thursday, July 10, 2003 -- About a dozen summer interns working in the D.C. area and more than ten alumni attended a seminar organized by Alexander Carr (CIT 1984). The two speakers were Maria Barron (Heinz 2000) and Joel Rubin (Heinz 1998).

Tour of Frank Lloyd Wright Glass Exhibit at the Renwick Gallery
Monday, June 30, 2003 -- More than a dozen alumni attended a special tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright glass exhibit. Thanks to Joanne Gigliotti (CFA 1967) for organizing the event.

GSIA Alumni Picnic at Nottoway Park in Vienna, Va.
Sunday, June 29, 2003 -- Sunshine and camaraderie graced the second annual Alumni Summer Picnic. Over 25 alumni, students, family and friends of GSIA enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere under the pavilion at Nottoway Park in Vienna, Va. Many, many thanks to Jill Wright (GSIA 1988) for organizing the picnic.
 

Pippin Musical at the Round House Theatre in Bethesda, Md.
Thursday, June 26, 2003 -- Fourteen alumni and guests attended the Pippin Musical playing at the new Round House Theatre in Bethesda. The music for Pippin was written by Stephen Schwartz (CFA 1968) when he was a member of the Scotch 'n' Soda Club at Carnegie Tech. Pippin went on to play on Broadway and won several Tony awards.

Happy Hour at Sequoia Restaurant on the Georgetown Waterfront
Wednesday, June 18, 2003 -- Nearly 40 alumni attended our first happy hour held at Sequoia Restaurant with its spectacular view of the Potomac River from the Georgetown Waterfront. Thanks to Amy Lanks (IA 1997) for organizing this event.

 

International Spy Museum Tour in Downtown D.C.
Saturday, June 14, 2003 -- More than 20 alumni and nearly 30 guests met at Gordon Biersch's restaurant and then proceeded on a group tour of the International Spy Museum, D.C.'s hottest attraction. The group bypassed the long lines, saw a briefing, and then toured the multi-level exhibit in smaller groups at their own pace.

Networking Lunch at Clyde's in Tysons Corner, Va.
Thursday, June 12, 2003 -- Eleven alumni gathered for lunch at Clyde's Restaurant in Tysons Corner to network. Everyone enjoyed it and recommended holding more networking lunches. There were two CEOs (one from CIT and H&SS), a few IT consultants and project managers, one attorney, a financial planner, and other professions, representing classes from 1961 to 2002. Alumni included graduates from CFA, CIT, GSIA, H&SS, and HEINZ.  Thanks to Tim Liu (H&SS 1985) for organizing this event. Wednesday, June 4, 2003 -- A small group of alumni plotted upcoming events for the summer and fall. Several new attendees volunteered to help plan exciting events and activities for recent graduates, alumni interested in tax and financial planning, and more cultural events. Thursday, May 22, 2003 -- More than 40 GSIA alumni attended an evening reception for GSIA Dean Kenneth Dunn at the Cosmos Club in downtown D.C. The Dean discussed his vision and strategic priorities for one of the country's top graduate business programs.

Happy Hour at Penn. Ave. Pour House on Capital Hill, D.C.

Networking Lunch at Otello in Downtown D.C.
Tuesday, May 13, 2003 -- Six alumni and the parent of a current student attended a networking lunch at Otello, an Italian restaurant on Connecticut Ave. near Dupont Circle. The alumni included attorneys, a research analyst, management consultants, and an accountant graduating from the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and 2000's. Career Survival Strategies Seminar in Arlington, Va.
Saturday, May 10, 2003 -- About 30 people attended the Career Survival Strategies Seminar that was co-sponsored by Lee Hecht Harrison and the Executive Conference Center. The all-day seminar provided attendees with useful training and insights on how to position themselves within their existing organization or make a transition during today's economy. Virginia Gold Cup in Great Meadows, Va.
Saturday, May 3, 2003 -- More than 20 alumni and guests attended the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase horse race in Great Meadows, Virginia. The group watched the race on University Row which was a reserved area organized by nearly 30 college and university alumni groups. Evening of Live Jazz Music at the National Museum of Natural History
Friday, March 28, 2003 -- A small gathering of alumni enjoyed live jazz by saxophonist Marshall Keys at the National Museum of Natural History in the Atrium Café next to the IMAX theater. Thanks to Angela Duin (Heinz 1999) for organizing the group.

Alumni Take Students Out to Dinner to Downtown D.C. restaurants
Thursday, March 27, 2003 -- Ten Carnegie Mellon students were in D.C. working on a Habitat for Humanity housing project during their spring break. Over three different nights, more than 30 alumni took them out to dinner to learn more about the Habitat program and current news about Carnegie Mellon. The dinners were held at City Lights, Alero, and Buca di Beppo in Dupont Circle. Thanks to Lori Weiss (CIT 1995) for organizing this event.

Hexagon Revue at Duke Ellington School of the Art in Georgetown
Sunday, March 16, 2003 -- Thirty alumni and guests attended the 48th annual Hexagon Revue held at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Georgetown. The show, "Rhyme and Punishment", with amateur actors and singers was a "hit" commented Bill Bean (CIT 1939). Thanks to Dave Calvo (CIT 1995) for organizing this event.

Dinner with Students in Fifth Year Scholars Program in Downtown D.C.
Saturday, March 8, 2003 -- The 5th Year Scholars Program offers an opportunity for a small number of exceptional students to pursue additional educational and research interests while remaining at Carnegie Mellon for one full year following the completion of their normal course of study, supported by free tuition and a scholarship grant. Recently five students in the program visited Washington, D.C. and were joined for dinner by several active alumni in the local chapter. Alumni in attendance were Dave Calvo (CIT 1995), Scott Davis (HEINZ 1997), Amy Lanks (IA 1997), Tim Liu (H&SS 1985), Michael Oldak (CIT 1969), Peter Rapp (CIT 1973, CIT 1976, GSIA 1976), and Lori Weiss (CIT 1995).

Heinz Network Washington 2003 at Senate Caucus Room
Thursday, March 6, 2003 -- More than 140 alumni and 100 current students networked at the beautiful Senate Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill. Thanks to the Heinz School and the local Heinz alumni committee for organizing what some regular attendees of this annual event called the "best one ever."

Thursday, March 6, 2003 -- More than 80 alumni and students gathered for a happy hour at Capitol City Brewery after the annual Heinz Network Washington event.

Alumni Career Services Seminar
Wednesday, March 5, 2003 -- The University Career Services office held a seminar on its services for alumni. More than twenty alumni attended the seminar held at Gordon Biersch Brewery. Afterwards, most took advantage of the opportunity to network with other alumni from the 1960's to Class of 2002. Speakers included Jennifer Purvis, Maureen May, Courtney Little, and Ron Delfine. Thanks to Teresa Allison (HEINZ 1999) for organizing the event.

Faculty Seminar on Economic Growth with Dr. Kathryn Shaw
Monday, February 24, 2003 -- More than twenty alumni attended a dinner presentation by GSIA professor Dr. Kathryn Shaw on "The Prospects for Economic Growth" at Gordon Biersch Brewery in downtown Washington, D.C. She discussed the current economic situation and how she expects the economic recovery to occur. Thanks to John Sengenberger, GSIA Alumni Director, for helping to organize this event.

Chapter Planning Meeting - New Executive Board Announced
February 11, 2003 -- Changes to the chapter's Executive Board were announced at the latest planning meeting. Lori Weiss (CIT 1995), retired as Chapter President after serving three plus years during which the chapter has seen tremendous growth in alumni involvement and activities.

Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997), former Vice President and Events chair, is the new Chapter President for a minimum of a two year term. Teresa Allison (HEINZ 1999) is the new Vice President. She will continue to be the Heinz Alumni Committee representative and chair of the seminar and lectures committee. Scott Davis (HEINZ 1997) will serve as Outreach Chair, a new position focused on volunteer and membership recruitment as well as networking programs. Tim Liu (H&SS 1985) will be the Secretary and Treasurer. Lois Findlay (GSIA 1991) is the GSIA DC Alumni Chapter Leader and representative. As past Chapter Presidents, Peter Rapp (CIT 1973, CIT 1976, GSIA 1976) along with Lori Weiss and Tim Liu will serve in advisory roles on the Executive Board.

CNN Crossfire Broadcast
February 6, 2003 -- More than 30 alumni and friends watched the fireworks on a live broadcast of CNN's popular political talk show, Crossfire. The debate centered around the Iraq situation. Afterwards, about 10 people went to Bertucci's for drinks and dinner before heading home in a light snowstorm. Thanks to Tim Liu for organizing this free event.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Caps Hockey Game
January 30, 2003 -- More than 130 alumni and friends watched the Washington Caps beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2 to 1 in an exciting hockey game at the MCI Center. Thanks to Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997) for organizing the event. 

More than 25 alumni attended the pre-game happy hour at Gordon Biersch. Thanks to Teresa Allison (HEINZ 1997) and Dave Calvo (CIT 1995) for hosting the event.
 

Washington Wizards Basketball Game
January 16, 2003 -- More than 90 alumni and friends watched the Washington Wizards beat the Orlando Magic 108-93 at the MCI Center. Michael Jordan scored 32 in what is supposedly his last playing year. The tickets were part of a special offered by the Washington Wizards and the Capital Area Network (CAN) which offered $50 seats for $30, with $5 of every ticket being donated to the alumni chapter, raising more than $450 for the chapter for future mailing and event budgets. Carnegie Mellon alumni purchased the 2nd most tickets (behind Virginia Tech) out of the 520 tickets sold through this special. Nearly 20 people stopped by Gordon Biersch for the pre-game happy hour.

Network Night 2003
January 8, 2003 -- More than 140 alumni from the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. metropolitan area attended the very first Network Night program. Network Night was an informal reception that provided a convenient forum for alumni and graduating students to meet employers as well as other alumni. Network Nights have been previously held in Boston, Philadelphia, and Silicon Valley.

The event was held in Baltimore and hosted by Robert J. Ungaretti (CIT 1970), President of Raven Technologies, a networking infrastructure and technology company. Thanks to the alumni and career placement office for organizing a successful event.
