Thursday, November 6, 2003 -- More than 50 alumni attended a reception and
seminar with GSIA professor Lester Lave. He spoke on the regulatory policy
implications of the Northeast Blackout of 2003.

Friday, October 24, 2003 -- A small group drove back to Pittsburgh for
Homecoming weekend. We will gauge interest for next year's homecoming.

Wednesday, October 22, 2003 -- A crowd of 30 alumni attended a happy hour at
CarPool for a billiards tournament, darts, and conversation. Fifteen people
competed for a cash drawing with half of the contributions going to the alumni
group and the other half going to a lucky winner. Congratulations to the winner,

Washington, D.C.
Saturday, October 18, 2003 -- Nearly 50 alumni and friends enjoyed a reception
at McCormick & Schmick's in downtown Washington, D.C. Dr. Mark Kamlet, Provost
of Carnegie Mellon and responsible for overseeing all academic and research
initiatives spoke about a variety of exciting developments. Astrid Rapp, current
chapter president, presented Lori Weiss, past chapter president, with a gift to
thank her for leading the chapter. Thanks to the University's Alumni Office for

Thursday, October 16, 2003 -- About a dozen alumni attended a seminar organized
by the Women's Business Center that featured Heinz professor Linda Babcock. She
spoke about her research recently published in her book, titled "Women
Don't Ask" that advises women on how to negotiate.

Washington, D.C.
Thursday, September 25, 2003 -- More than 20 alumni, family, and friends enjoyed
a wonderful evening of art culture at The Corcoran Gallery of Art. The evening
began with a lecture by Christina DePaul (CFA 1981), Dean of the Corcoran
College of Art. She shared about career path since graduating from Carnegie
Mellon. Afterwards, a curator lead the group on a private tour of Beyond the
Frame: Impressionism Revisited - The Sculptures of J. Seward Johnson, Jr. The
evening closed with a wine and cheese reception. Thanks to Monica Robles (GSIA

Wednesday, August 6, 2003 -- The Rock Bottom Brewery is the place to be in D.C.
with its $1 beers on Wednesday night. Nearly 30 alumni hung out together in a
crowded bar area. Recent graduates mingled with graduates from as far back as
the 1960's. Graduates from CIT, H&SS, Heinz, GSIA, and MCS were out in full

Sunday, July 27, 2003 -- A dozen alumni and guests watched the Bowie Baysox
(Pittsburgh Pirates AA-affiliate) defeat the Altoona Curve 2-0. Michael Swann,
the 5-year old son of Thomas Swann (GSIA 1994), got to run around the bases in

Saturday, July 19, 2003 -- Twenty alumni and guests watched a doubleheader
soccer game at RFK stadium. The DC United men's team lost to the San Jose

Saturday, July 13, 2003 -- Students starting at Carnegie Mellon in the Fall,
their parents, and alumni gathered together at the annual Freshman on the Road

Sunday, June 29, 2003 -- Sunshine and camaraderie graced the second annual

Pippin Musical at the Round House Theatre in
Bethesda, Md.
Thursday, June 26, 2003 -- Fourteen alumni and guests attended the Pippin
Musical playing at the new Round House Theatre in Bethesda. The music for Pippin
was written by Stephen Schwartz (CFA
1968) when he was a member of the Scotch 'n' Soda Club at Carnegie
Tech. Pippin went on to play on Broadway and won several Tony
awards.

International Spy Museum Tour in Downtown D.C.
Saturday, June
14, 2003 -- More than 20 alumni and nearly 30 guests met at Gordon Biersch's
restaurant and then proceeded on a group tour of the International
Spy Museum, D.C.'s hottest attraction. The group bypassed the long lines,
saw a briefing, and then toured the multi-level exhibit in smaller groups at
their own pace.

Va.
Thursday, June 12, 2003 -- Eleven alumni gathered for lunch at Clyde's
Restaurant in Tysons Corner to network. Everyone enjoyed it and recommended
holding more networking lunches. There were two CEOs (one from CIT and
H&SS), a few IT consultants and project managers, one attorney, a financial
planner, and other professions, representing classes from 1961 to 2002. Alumni
included graduates from CFA, CIT, GSIA, H&SS, and HEINZ. Thanks to Tim

consultants, and an accountant graduating from the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and

Strategies Seminar that was co-sponsored by Lee Hecht Harrison and the Executive
Conference Center. The all-day seminar provided attendees with useful training
and insights on how to position themselves within their existing organization or

Thursday, March 27, 2003 -- Ten Carnegie Mellon students were in D.C. working on
a Habitat for Humanity housing project during their spring break. Over three
different nights, more than 30 alumni
took them out to dinner to learn more about the
Habitat program and current news about Carnegie Mellon. The dinners were held at City Lights,

Sunday, March 16, 2003 -- Thirty alumni and guests attended the 48th annual
Hexagon Revue held at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Georgetown. The
show, "Rhyme and Punishment", with amateur actors and singers was a

Dinner with Students in Fifth Year Scholars
Program in Downtown D.C.
Saturday, March 8, 2003 -- The 5th Year Scholars Program offers an opportunity
for a small number of exceptional students to pursue additional educational and
research interests while remaining at Carnegie Mellon for one full year
following the completion of their normal course of study, supported by free
tuition and a scholarship grant. Recently five students in the program
visited Washington, D.C. and were joined for dinner by several active alumni in
the local chapter. Alumni in attendance were Dave Calvo (CIT 1995), Scott Davis
(HEINZ 1997), Amy Lanks (IA 1997), Tim Liu (H&SS 1985), Michael Oldak (CIT 1969),

Thursday, March 6, 2003 -- More than 140 alumni and 100 current students
networked at the beautiful Senate Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office
Building on Capitol Hill. Thanks to the Heinz School and the
local Heinz alumni committee for organizing what some regular attendees of this
annual event called the "best one ever."

Alumni Career Services Seminar
Wednesday, March 5, 2003 -- The University Career Services office held a seminar
on its services for alumni. More than twenty alumni attended the seminar held at
Gordon Biersch Brewery. Afterwards, most took advantage of the opportunity to
network with other alumni from the 1960's to Class of 2002. Speakers included Jennifer Purvis, Maureen May,
Courtney Little, and Ron Delfine. Thanks to Teresa Allison (HEINZ

Faculty Seminar on Economic Growth with Dr.
Kathryn Shaw
Monday, February 24, 2003 -- More than twenty alumni attended a dinner
presentation by GSIA professor Dr. Kathryn Shaw on "The Prospects for
Economic Growth" at Gordon Biersch Brewery in downtown Washington, D.C. She
discussed the current economic situation and how she expects the economic
recovery to occur. Thanks to John Sengenberger, GSIA Alumni Director, for
helping to organize this event.
Chapter Planning Meeting - New Executive Board
Announced
February 11, 2003 -- Changes to the chapter's Executive Board were announced
at the latest planning meeting. Lori Weiss (CIT 1995), retired as Chapter
President after serving three plus years during which the chapter has seen
tremendous growth in alumni involvement and activities.
Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997), former Vice President and Events chair, is the new
Chapter President for a minimum of a two year term. Teresa Allison (HEINZ 1999)
is the new Vice President. She will continue to be the Heinz Alumni Committee
representative and chair of the seminar and lectures committee. Scott Davis
(HEINZ 1997) will serve as Outreach Chair, a new position focused on volunteer
and membership recruitment as well as networking programs. Tim Liu
(H&SS 1985) will be the Secretary and Treasurer. Lois Findlay (GSIA 1991) is
the GSIA DC Alumni Chapter Leader and representative. As past Chapter
Presidents, Peter Rapp (CIT 1973, CIT 1976, GSIA 1976) along with Lori Weiss and Tim Liu will serve in advisory
roles on the Executive Board.

Crossfire Broadcast
February 6, 2003 -- More than 30 alumni and friends watched the fireworks on
a live broadcast of CNN's popular political talk show, Crossfire. The debate
centered around the Iraq situation. Afterwards, about 10 people went to
Bertucci's for drinks and dinner before heading home in a light snowstorm.

Pittsburgh
Penguins vs. Washington Caps Hockey Game
January 30, 2003 -- More than 130 alumni and friends watched the
Washington Caps beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2 to 1 in an exciting
hockey game at the MCI Center. Thanks to Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997) for organizing the event.
More than 25 alumni attended the pre-game happy hour at Gordon Biersch. Thanks
to Teresa Allison (HEINZ 1997) and Dave Calvo (CIT 1995) for hosting the event.
Washington Wizards Basketball Game
January 16, 2003 -- More than 90 alumni and friends watched the
Washington Wizards beat the Orlando Magic 108-93 at the MCI Center.
Michael Jordan scored 32 in what is supposedly his last playing
year. The tickets were part of a special offered by the Washington
Wizards and the Capital
Area Network (CAN) which offered $50 seats for $30, with $5 of
every ticket being donated to the alumni chapter, raising more than
$450 for the chapter for future mailing and event budgets. Carnegie
Mellon alumni purchased the 2nd most tickets (behind Virginia Tech)
out of the 520 tickets sold through this special. Nearly 20 people
stopped by Gordon Biersch for the pre-game happy hour.

Network Night 2003
January 8, 2003 -- More than 140 alumni from the Baltimore and
Washington, D.C. metropolitan area attended the very first Network
Night program. Network Night was an informal reception that provided
a convenient forum for alumni and
graduating students to meet employers as well as other alumni. Network Nights
have been previously held in Boston, Philadelphia, and Silicon Valley.
The event was held in Baltimore and hosted by Robert J. Ungaretti
(CIT 1970), President of Raven
Technologies, a networking
infrastructure and technology company. Thanks to the alumni and
career placement office for organizing a successful event.
