Happy Hour at Zig's in Alexandria, Va.
Sunday, December 5 -- About a half dozen alumni enjoyed watching the Steeler's game at Zig's in Alexandria. Thanks to Brian Dean (H&SS 1990) for organizing this happy hour event.

Tepper First Friday Happy Hour at Whitlows in Arlington, Va.
Friday, December 3 -- About a dozen alumni from the Tepper School of Business enjoyed an evening of networking and drinks at Whitlows on Wilson in Arlington, Va.

Ladies Clothes Swap & Charity Event in Arlington, Va.
Thursday, December 2 -- A dozen alumni gathered together for a fun filled evening at our first clothing swap benefit for charity. Bags of unswapped clothing were donated to "Suited for Change" who's mission is to provide professional clothing and ongoing career education to low-income women to increase their employment and job retention potential and to contribute to their economic independence. Thanks to Tepper alumni alum Trish Nowoslawski for organizing the event and to alum Koshi Delaney-Karell for hosting the event at her home.

Help the Homeless Walkathon in Washington, D.C.
Saturday, November 20 -- Several alumni participated in the Help the Homeless Walkathon to raise money. Thanks to Namita Amin (Tepper 1996, 2000) for organizing our participation and arranging for Fannie Mae to waive the entry fee.

Tepper Alumni Tour of the International Spy Museum
Saturday, November 13 -- Alumni from the Tepper School of Business toured the International Spy Museum.

Wine Tasting at Best Cellars in Arlington, Va.
Tuesday, November 9 -- More than 30 alumni and friends from Carnegie Mellon plus alumni from the University of Pittsburgh enjoyed an evening of wine tasting in Arlington, Va. Thanks to Julie Wilson (H&SS 1999) for organizing this delicious event as well as help from as well as Dave Vurdelja (H&SS 1987).

Saturday, October 23 -- Nearly 30 alumni and guests enjoyed a presentation on Carnegie Mellon's robotics ventures given by Professor Red Whittaker. Thanks to Mike Oldak (CIT 1969) for organizing the event.

Wednesday, September 15 -- Sixteen alumni 70 enjoyed lunch and networking at the hip Zaytinya restaurant located in downtown, D.C.

Orioles vs. Yankees at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Md.
Sunday, September 12 -- More than 35 alumni bought over 150 tickets for the Alumni Day baseball game. Thanks to the Capital Area Network (CAN) for organizing the event which was attended by nearly 1000 alumni from more than a dozen other colleges and universities.
 

Happy Hour at Phillips Restaurant in Baltimore, Md.
Sunday, September 12 -- Nearly 20 alumni and friends enjoyed the pre-game happy hour at Phillips Restaurant at Harbor Place in Baltimore, Md. Thanks to Tim Liu (H&SS 1985) for organizing the happy hour.
 

Reception for Winners of NSF/White House Award in Washington, D.C.
Thursday, September 9 -- Nearly 70 alumni plus a dozen guests celebrated the announcement that professors Jennifer Lerner and
Yoky Matsuoka were just 2 of 20 winners selected by the National Science Foundation for the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Dr. Jennifer Lerner is from the College of Humanities & Social Sciences and heads the Emotion and Decision Laboratory. Dr. Yoky Matsuoka of the School of Computer Science is the head of the Neurobotics Laboratory in the Robotics Institute.

The evening reception was held at the elegant St. Regis Washington hotel near the White House. Dr. John Lehoczky, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, introduced the winners and Dr. Lerner shared some of the findings of her research on emotions and decision making. Thanks to Judy Cole, associate vice president of alumni relations, for helping to offset part of the costs of the event.
 

Annual Young Alumni Summer Dinner at La Tasca in Washington, D.C.
Thursday, August 26 -- The second annual summer dinner for alumni who graduated within the past five years was held at the La Tasca Restaurant known for its Spanish tapas. The event was attended by 28 recent graduates. Thanks to

Happy Hour to Benefit Whitman Walker Clinic at Chevy's in Arlington, Va.
Thursday, August 19 -- More than three dozen alumni and friends attend a happy hour to help raise funds for the Whitman Walker Clinic.
Thanks to Joanna Peters (H&SS 2000, MISM 2002) for organizing the event who will be participating in an upcoming benefit run.

Boston Pops and Keith Lockhart at Wolf Trap in Va.
Wednesday, August 11 -- More than two dozen alumni and friends enjoyed
a wonderful evening performance by the Boston Pops at Wolf Trap. A smaller group had the opportunity to meet conductor and alumni Keith Lockhart (CFA 1987). Thanks to Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997) for organizing the event.
 

Freshmen on the Road in Bethesda, Md.
Saturday, July 24 -- More than 40 incoming freshmen and their parents gathered together at the home of Mike Oldak (CIT 1969) in Bethesda, Md. This was an opportunity for the new students to meet other peers from their hometown before heading to campus in late August

Education Policy Seminar at RAND With Gina Ikemoto in Arlington, Va.
Thursday, July 22 -- The annual summer intern seminar program featured Gina Schuyler Ikemoto (H&SS 1996), Research Analyst in the Education Division of the RAND Corporation, the nation's largest and oldest policy think tank. The talk was held at RAND's offices in Arlington, Va. and was attended by a dozen interns and a few alumni. Thanks to Alex Carr (CIT 1981) for organizing this annual event.

Tartan Softball Team Enjoys Post-Game Happy Hour in downtown D.C.
Wednesday, July 14, 2004 -- The Carnegie Mellon CAN (Capital Alumni Network) co-ed softball team hosted the recent alumni chapter happy hour at the BottomLine in downtown D.C. Local alumni lifted the softball team's spirit after a close defeat against Washington & Lee. The team has suffered many defeats this year; however, the after-game socializing has been on the upswing the entire season.

Event Planning Meeting at Bertucci's in Washington, D.C.
Tuesday, July 13, 2004 -- About a dozen alumni gathered at Bertucci's over Italian food and plotted upcoming events for the rest of the summer and fall. Stay tuned for upcoming exciting events!

Summer Picnic for Tepper/Heinz Alumni in Vienna, Va.
Saturday, June 26, 2004 -- More than 70 alumni from Tepper School of Business/GSIA and the Heinz School enjoyed the first joint Tepper/Heinz summer picnic at Nottoway Park in Vienna, Va.

Happy Hour at Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington, Va.
Thursday, June 17, 2004 -- More than 25 alumni braved thunderstorms to attend our latest happy hour at the Clarendon Ballroom. When the clouds cleared, the crowd went up to the rooftop to enjoy the rest of the happy hour.

Thursday, June 3, 2004 -- About 15 information systems alumni enjoyed a reception at Champps in Arlington, Va. with professor Larry Heimann and his family, including his two chess champion sons, Alex and Mark. Thanks to the IS Department for sponsoring the event.

Executive Planning Meeting at Harry's Tap Room in Arlington, Va.
Monday, June 7, 2004 -- The chapter's executive planning group celebrated the year's success and plotted next year's plans at Harry's Tap Room. Networking Lunch at Maggiano's in Tysons Corner, Va.
Tuesday, May 11, 2004 -- A dozen alumni and guests gathered at Maggiano’s in Tyson’s Corner on Thursday for lunch. They enjoyed family style dining and good conversation. To get to know each other, they participated in a variety of networking activities (exchanging business cards, rotating seats at the table, and introducing themselves to the group). Thursday, April 1, 2004 -- About a dozen alumni attended a seminar on long and short-term memory at the Carnegie Institution in downtown D.C. Kilts and Cocktails: Starling String Quartet in Clifton, Va.
Saturday, March 27, 2004 -- The musical talents of the Starling String Quartet entertained about two dozen alumni and guests at the famous Heart in Hand Restaurant in the historic area of Clifton, Va. Saturday, March 13, 2004 -- Alumni Scott Hoburg (HNZ 2003) gathered a small group of alumni to watch the University of Pittsburgh and other college basketball teams battle it out in the NCAA basketball tournament on a Saturday afternoon. The event, held in Crystal City Sports Pub in Arlington, VA, was sponsored by the Capital Alumni Network. Thanks Scott!

Meeting the Energy - Climate Challenge Seminar in Downtown D.C.
Thursday, March 11, 2004 -- A group of alumni attended a seminar on "Meeting the Energy - Climate Challenge" at the Carnegie Institution located in downtown D.C. in Dupont Circle. The speaker was John Holdren, the Teresa and John Heinz Professor of Environmental Policy and Director of the Program on Science, Technology, and Public Policy at Harvard's Kennedy School, as well as Professor of Environmental Science and Public Policy in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University. Alumni Career Panel in McLean, Va.
Monday, March 8, 2004 -- About 30 alumni attended a panel discussion on navigating your career. The panelists were Al Mink (GSIA 1980), Unisys, Director at Unisys, U.S., Federal Government Group; Brad LaPray (GSIA 1988), President of Zentech, Inc.; and Will Guyton (GSIA 1997), Managing Director of Global Alliances for AVAYA, Inc. The panel moderator was Teresa Allison (HNZ 1999), Information Technology Specialist, US Agency for International Development. Heinz Network Washington and Post Happy Hour on Capital Hill
Thursday, March 4, 2004 -- More than 200 people attended the 5th annual Heinz Network Washington event on Capital Hill where alumni, students, and employers networked. More than 50 alumni and students attended the post-event happy hour at Capital City Brewery.

Seminar and Reception with GSIA Professor Tayur in Arlington, Va.
Thursday, February 12, 2004 -- About 40 alumni enjoyed a seminar given by Dr. Sridhar Tayur, GSIA professor and CEO of SmartOps. Dr. Tayur gave insights on the challenges and motivations of starting a business within a research institution.

Networking Lunch in Reston, Va.
Wednesday, February 11, 2004 -- Thirteen alumni attended our first networking lunch for 2004 at Clyde's in Reston, Va. Alumni got a chance to meet other alumni from a variety of schools including CIT, GSIA, Heinz, and H&SS. Thanks to David Vurdelja (IA 1987) for organizing this event.

Dinner with Professor Catalina Achim in Arlington, Va.
Saturday, February 7, 2004 -- A small group of alumni gathered at Lebanese Taverna restaurant in Pentagon Row in Arlington, Va. to have dinner with Professor Catalina Achim. Dr. Achim is an Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon. Her current research projects are in the fields of super molecular chemistry and magneto-electronics, focused on nanotechnology.

Ronald Reagan Book Discussion by Prof. Skinner in Downtown D.C.
Thursday, January 22, 2004 -- Alumni gathered to hear Professor Kiron Skinner, co-editor of the recently published book, “Reagan: A Life in Letters” which is a collection of letters that Ronald Reagan began writing as a young boy. The writings chronicle his life through careers as an actor, Governor of California and President of the United States. Kiron K. Skinner is an assistant professor of history and political science at Carnegie Mellon. She also is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Thanks to Dave Calvo (CIT 1995) and Teresa Allison (HNZ 1999) for organizing this event.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals Hockey in Downtown D.C.
Sunday, January 18, 2004 -- Thirty-five alumni, friends, and family watched the hometown team defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3. Thanks to Astrid Rapp (H&SS 1997) for organizing this event.

Enterprising Women Exhibit in Downtown D.C.
Friday, January 9, 2004 -- A small group of alumni attended the exhibit, Enterprising Women: 250 Years of American Business, at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in downtown, D.C. The exhibit featured women including media moguls Katherine Graham and Oprah Winfrey to eBay President Meg Whitman. Thanks to Joanne Gigliotti (CFA 1967) for organizing the event.
